Box Score Hamilton College shot better than 53 percent from the field and the Continentals routed Keystone College 97-60 in the championship game of the 2017 Elmira College Men's Basketball Tip-Off Classic at Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium on Sunday.
Hamilton's Kena Gilmour '20 was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Tim Doyle '19 and Peter Hoffmann '19 made the all-tournament team. On Saturday the Continentals came from behind to defeat SUNY Oswego 75-69.
Hamilton (2-0 overall) posted a 51-point win against Keystone at home last season. The Continentals enjoyed a 50-29 advantage on the boards and outscored the Giants 54-24 in the paint in Sunday's title game. The teams committed a total of 54 turnovers and were credited with 27 steals.
Keystone (1-2) didn't shoot well from anywhere on the floor. The Giants owned a field goal percentage of 31 percent, including 5 of 27 from 3-point range, and shot 59.4 percent at the free-throw line.
Hoffmann made all nine of his shot attempts from the field and went 2-for-2 at the line as he finished with 20 points in just 19 minutes. Doyle chipped in 16 points and five assists, and Gilmour added 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Michael Grassey '19 filled the stat sheet with nine points, eight boards and six assists.
Mark Gilliam paced Keystone with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Perry Belcher registered 12 points and Devin Stricklin made a game-high four steals.
Hamilton jumped out to a 6-0 lead on 3-pointers by Doyle and Grassey, and the Continentals never trailed. A layup by Hoffmann gave Hamilton its first double-digit lead at 14-4 just 4:20 into the first half. The Giants didn't get closer than five points after that.
Keystone was still within seven points at 28-21 with 8:39 left in the half but the Continentals seized control of the contest with a 17-4 run over the next seven minutes. Mike McEneney '21 scored the last four points of the spurt and put Hamilton up by 20 at 45-25 with 1:35 remaining. Terrence Palmer's layup with 35 seconds to go pulled the Giants within 45-27 at the half.
The Continentals maintained their big lead throughout the second half as Gilmour and Hoffmann combined to score 25 points in the final 20 minutes. Hamilton's lead ballooned to 38 points at 93-55 on a layup by Spencer Kendall '21 with 2:06 left.
The Continentals travel to Danbury, Conn., to take on Western Connecticut State University in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.
