Women's basketball opens season with a win over Hartwick

The Hamilton College women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to win their season-opener 52-40 over Hartwick College on Friday evening at SUNY Brockport's Tip-Off Classic in Brockport, N.Y.

Carly O'Hern '20 drained four buckets from three-point range for a team-high 14 points and added three steals. Lauren Getman '18 tallied 11 points and seven rebounds, and Halie Serbent '19 chipped in 10 points.

Carly Johnson led Hartwick with a game-high 19 points. Caitlin Corbett tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Continentals outscored the Hawks 17-12 in the third quarter and 12-3 in the fourth to turn a 25-23 halftime deficit into a 12-point victory.

Hartwick developed a 28-23 advantage to start the third quarter before O'Hern sunk two back-to-back threes for Hamilton. Hartwick's Nalya Hill quickly took back the 30-29 edge with a second-chance layup before a timeout was called by the Continentals.

Following the timeout, Mia Caterisano '19 (four points) ignited a 9-0 run for a 38-30 Hamilton lead, as the Continentals finished the third quarter up 40-37.

The Hawks came within two points with 6:56 remaining in the final quarter, but the Continentals defense kept Hartwick scoreless and Hamilton closed out the game with 10 unanswered points. Getman recorded seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter alone.

Hamilton faces the Alfred University Saxons on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. to wrap up the SUNY Brockport Tip-Off Classic. Alfred (0-1) was defeated 83-64 by SUNY Brockport in the second game of the Classic on Friday night.
