Box Score Hamilton College's Andrew Groll '19 poured in 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Continentals upset the nationally ranked No. 9 Wesleyan University Cardinals 92-76 in NESCAC action at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon.
The Continentals (10-2, 2-0 NESCAC) won their sixth straight game and improved their conference-leading scoring average to 87.3 points per contest. Wesleyan opened its season with 11 wins in a row but has lost three games in the last five days.
Groll posted his second double-double this weekend, his fifth this season and his 12th at Hamilton. Michael Grassey '19 chipped in 13 points and eight boards. The Continentals doubled up the Cardinals in bench points, 38-19. Tim Doyle '19 came off the bench and contributed 13 points and four assists, and fellow reserve Kena Gilmour '20 dropped in 10 points. Hamilton went 24-for-26 (92.3 percent) at the free throw line.
Wesleyan's Nathan Krill recorded his own double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Krill had already accomplished the feat by halftime with 15 points and 10 boards. Kevin O'Brien scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and Harry Rafferty drained three 3-pointers after the break and finished with nine points. The Cardinals held a 47-41 advantage on the glass but shot just 35.3 percent from the floor.
There were three ties and nine lead changes but all of that took place in the opening nine minutes. A layup by Krill gave Wesleyan a 15-12 edge before the Continentals took the lead for good with a 15-3 run.
Vincent Conn '20 started the spurt with a free throw and Grassey nailed a 3-pointer for a 16-15 lead. Groll followed with a layup and two free throws and Conn made two more. After an old-fashioned 3-point play by Krill pulled the Cardinals within 22-18, Conn buried a 3-pointer and Wes Wilbur '17 capped the run with two shots from the line for a 27-18 cushion with 8:19 left.
A basket from beyond the arc by Gilmour gave Hamilton its first double-digit lead at 30-20 and the Continentals eventually took their biggest advantage of the half of 12 points on three occasions. Conn grabbed an offensive rebound and beat the halftime buzzer with his putback for a 41-32 lead.
Wesleyan cut its deficit to three points at 43-40 after a layup by O'Brien and that was as close as the Cardinals could get in the second half. Wesleyan was still within four points after an O'Brien 3-pointer made it 55-51 with 13:08 remaining.
Hamilton put the game away with a 23-6 run that ended on a jumper by Groll and gave the Continentals a 78-57 advantage with 6:19 to go. Peter Hoffmann '19 (six points) and Doyle (eight) accounted for Hamilton's first 14 points during the spurt. The Continentals shot 51.5 percent from the field in the second half.
Hamilton travels to Bates College for another NESCAC game on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.
