Box Score Six Hamilton College players scored in double figures and the Continentals posted an 86-70 NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.
The Continentals (9-2 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) recorded their fifth straight win and never trailed. The score was tied once at 2-2. Hamilton leads the conference in scoring with 86.9 points per game.
Peter Hoffmann '19 led the Continentals with 21 points and a career-high seven blocked shots. Hoffmann, who leads the team with 18 points per game, also grabbed eight rebounds. He has scored 20 or more points in each of the last three games.
Michael Grassey '19 dropped in 12 points and Kena Gilmour '20 scored 10 of his 12 points off the bench for Hamilton. Andrew Groll '19 collected his fourth double-double this season and the 11th of his career with 11 points and 11 boards. Tim Doyle '19 contributed 11 points and a career-best seven assists off the bench, and Joe Pucci '18 scored 11 points. Jack Dwyer '18 handed out six assists and is third in the NESCAC with 6.1 per game.
Daniel Janel paced Connecticut Coll. with game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds. David Labossiere also boasted a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards and added three steals off the bench. Lee Messier chipped in 10 points. The Camels (8-3, 0-1) shot 36 percent from the floor including 5 of 25 from 3-point range.
The Continentals used an early 8-0 run to take a 10-2 lead. Pucci and Grassey nailed 3-pointers and Groll drained a jumper. After a pair of Janel baskets pulled Connecticut Coll. within 10-6, Hamilton scored nine in a row for its first double-digit lead. Doyle sank a 3-pointer, Hoffmann converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and then buried a trifecta for a 19-6 cushion with 12:22 left.
The Continentals still led 25-14 when they went on a 7-0 spurt to take their largest advantage of the night. Hoffmann and Gilmour made baskets on consecutive Hamilton possessions, Groll hit two free throws and Hoffmann made the first of two for a 32-14 lead with 7:12 remaining. The Continentals also held 18-point leads at 34-16 and 36-18.
The Camels roared back with a 15-3 run that cut their deficit to 39-33 with 44 seconds to go. Lebossiere, Messier and Phil Leotsakos all made 3-pointers during the spurt and Isaiah Robinson capped it with a jumper. Dwyer's bucket with 35 seconds left gave Hamilton a 41-33 cushion that the Continentals took into the break.
Hamilton shot 51.4 percent (18-35) in the second half. Connecticut Col. pulled within four points once at 55-51 on a layup by Messier with 13:39 remaining. The Camels were still behind by just seven at 75-68 with 4:05 to go but the Continentals ended the game on an 11-2 run. Gilmour and Pucci scored in the paint and Groll made a free throw. After two free throws by Connecticut College's Tyler Rowe made it 80-70 with 1:40 left, Pucci clinched the win with a pair of 3-pointers that accounted for the final margin.
Hamilton hosts nationally ranked No. 9 Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. while the Camels travel to No. 22 Middlebury on Saturday.
