Men's basketball explodes for 94 in win against Williams

Box Score

Hamilton College's Kena Gilmour '20 poured in 22 points in just 23 minutes off the bench and the Continentals posted a 94-76 NESCAC win against the Williams College Ephs at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday night.

The Continentals (12-4, 3-2 NESCAC) were 12 of 26 from 3-point range, held a 45-35 advantage on the glass and scored 21 points off 15 Williams turnovers. The Ephs scored the first basket but Hamilton followed with a 9-0 run and led the rest of the way. The Continentals are 6-0 at home.

Gilmour came out firing and never stopped as he finished 6 of 7 from beyond the arc. Peter Hoffmann '19 posted his second straight double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and added three blocked shots and three steals. Hoffmann has scored 20 or more points seven times in 14 games. Andrew Groll '19 recorded his 13th career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 boards. Tim Doyle '19 dropped in 10 points and Jack Dwyer '18 chipped in nine points and eight assists.

Kyle Scadlock scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half for Williams (12-5, 1-4). Scadlock also grabbed nine rebounds, handed out four assists, blocked two shots and made two steals. Mike Greenman led a big night by the Ephs' bench with 15 points, Matthew Karpowicz had 10 and Marcos Soto ended up with nine.

Hamilton took the lead for good with two Hoffmann layups sandwiched around another by Michael Grassey '19 and a 3-pointer by Joe Pucci '18 that made it 9-2 less than four minutes into the first half. Williams didn't get closer than four points the rest of the night.

A Scadlock layup pulled the Ephs within nine at 22-13 with 8:07 left in the half. The Continentals countered with a furious 21-4 run during the next five minutes. Gilmour and Doyle kicked it off with back-to-back 3-pointers and Dwyer on a drive to the hoop. After a Soto layup, Hoffmann and Gilmour hit back-to-back shots from long range for a 36-15 cushion. Karpowicz stopped the bleeding with a dunk but Gilmour drained another 3-pointer, Hoffmann capped a fast break with a thunderous slam and Doyle made a layup for a 43-17 lead with 3:11 remaining. The 26-point lead was Hamilton's largest of the night.

Greenman beat the halftime buzzer with a deep trifecta and Williams went into the break down 45-25. The Ephs shot 29.4 percent from the floor in the first half while the Continentals were 8 of 16 from 3-point range.

Williams, which lost for the fourth time in its last five games, slowly chipped away at Hamilton's commanding lead early in the second half. Another Greenman 3-pointer cut the Ephs' deficit to nine at 68-59 with 8:40 to go. Four straight points by Scadlock made it a seven-point game at 70-63 with 7:45 left. At that point, Williams was 13 of 18 from the field in the second half.

The Continentals responded with a 9-0 spurt and led by double digits the rest of the way. After a 30-second timeout by Hamilton, Gilmour hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions and Doyle nailed another after a Williams timeout for a 79-63 lead with 6:14 remaining. The Continentals ended up scoring more than 90 points for the sixth time this season and lead the conference with 86.5 points per game.

Hamilton travels to Wells College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
