Box Score Hamilton College's Michael Grassey '19 scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Continentals breezed to an 83-68 non-conference win against SUNY Polytechnic at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Tuesday night.
The Continentals (11-4 overall) improved to 5-0 at home this season. Hamilton has won seven in a row against the Wildcats and the Continentals lead the all-time series, 31-2.
Grassey's double-double was the sixth of his Hamilton career. Peter Hoffmann '19 posted his first double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 boards and he added two blocked shots. Kena Gilmour '20 dropped in 12 points, Vincent Conn '20 chipped in a season-best 10 and Jack Dwyer '18 handed out five assists. Gilmour and Conn were part of the Continentals' 36 bench points. Hamilton held a 49-42 advantage on the glass and went 21-for-26 at the free throw line.
Quayshaun Mitchell and Kevin Williams recorded 18 points and nine rebounds apiece for SUNY Poly (8-5). Mitchell was also credited with three steals, Terrynce Wilson scored 11 points and Josh Gregory drained three 3-pointers and ended up with 11 points off the bench. Wilson scored all his points in the second half. The Wildcats attempted 34 free throws but shot just 30.5 percent from the floor.
SUNY Poly held a pair of two-point leads early in the first half and the score was still tied at 6-6 with 15:45 left. The Continentals went on a 9-1 run that gave them the lead for good. Gilmour started the run and put Hamilton ahead to stay on a layup. Hoffmann added a layup and, after the Wildcats' Joseph Ojo made the score 10-7 with a free throw, Gilmour swished the first of his two free throws. Hoffmann followed with two driving layups in a row and Conn made the second of two free throws for a 16-7 lead.
After a jumper by Peyton Griffiths pulled SUNY Poly back within seven, the Continentals exploded for a 13-0 spurt that put them comfortably ahead. Gilmour started the run with a 3-pointer and Tim Doyle '19 scored from the paint. Groll canned a jumper, Conn made 1 of 2 free throws and Kyle Pitman '17 made both of his. Grassey buried a shot from beyond the arc and Hamilton led 29-9 with 8:55 remaining.
The Continentals held a 44-32 cushion at the break thanks to 32 points from Grassey, Hoffmann and Gilmour. The Wildcats shot just 26.5 percent from the floor, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range, in the first half.
Mitchell started the second half with a 3-pointer that put SUNY Poly back within nine, but Hamilton scored the next 10 points and the Wildcats didn't get closer than the final 15-point margin the rest of the way. Grassey started the run with a jumper and a trifecta, Hoffmann banged home another 3-pointer and a Gilmour jumper made it 54-35 with 16:54 to go. The Continentals led by as many as 27 points midway through the second half.
Hamilton hosts Williams College in NESCAC action on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
