Men's Ice Hockey

Big third period leads men's hockey to 4-2 win over Conn. College

Box Score

The Hamilton College men's hockey team rallied for three third-period goals to remain undefeated by posting a 4-2 NESCAC win over visiting Connecticut College Friday night at Russell Sage Rink. The Continentals (11-0-2, 6-0-2 NESCAC) are the nation's only unbeaten hockey team at any level.

Hamilton, ranked fifth nationally by D3hockey.com and sixth by USCHO.com, outshot the visitors 17-7 in the final period, scoring three times in the final 15 minutes to erase the Camels' 2-1 lead.

Jason Brochu '19 scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner and Jon Carkeek '17 contributed a pair of assists.

Hamilton's game-winning goal -- the first this winter for Brochu -- came with 7:54 left in the third just 11 seconds into a Continental power play. He now has eight goals this season, tying him for the team lead. His go-ahead goal came on a slap shot from between the circles after he gathered a rebound of Carkeek's shot.

Brochu scored the only goal of the first period before the Camels took a one-goal lead with a pair of goals just 2:02 apart early in the second.

The hosts evened the score 5:14 into the third period. Bennett Morrison '20 was credited with the tying goal (his second of the year). Tyler Bruneteau '18 -- who assisted on Morrison's goal -- closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Bruneteau converted a pass from Carkeek for his fourth goal of the year. Carkeek, who was set up by Brad Smelstor '17, is the nation's sixth-leading scorer among defenseman (3-11=14).

Evan Buitenhuis '18 finished with 29 saves and now ranks third in Division III in save percentage (.955) and fourth in goals against average (1.43). Hamilton's scoring defense is the nation's second-best, allowing just 1.46 goals per game.

The Continentals opened the scoring with 3:34 left before the first intermission. Brochu took a pass that Rory Gagnon '19 sent from behind the Camel net and beat Connecticut College goaltender Connor Rodericks stick side from just below the faceoff circle.

Chris Jellison and Jacob Moreau put the visitors ahead with early second-period goals. Jellison notched his first goal of the season to tie the score; a shot by Dylan Chase was blocked and Jellison converted the rebound from in front of the net at the 3:49 mark with a shot that deflected off a Continental defender.

A breakaway goal by Moreau put the Camels in front. Following a scrum at the boards deep in the Hamilton zone, Jake Farabee tipped the puck to Ryan Petti and Petti connected with Moreau, who carried the puck from blue line to blue line before scoring the go-ahead goal.

Rodericks finished with 37 saves for the Camels, who fell to 3-8-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.

Hamilton concludes its four-game homestand Saturday, hosting Tufts in a 3 p.m. NESCAC game.
