Hamilton opens volleyball weekend with loss to Middlebury

The Hamilton College volleyball team dropped a NESCAC match to host Middlebury College in Pepin Gymnasium Friday night. The host Panthers swept the contest, winning by scores of 29-27, 25-19 and 25-15.

The Continentals are now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC. Middlebury improves to 2-1 in conference with an overall mark of 5-3.

Kyndal Burdin '18 led the visitors with her 18th career double-double, collecting 27 assists and 12 digs. Christine Zizzi '18 finished with a team-leading 17 digs.

Giuliana Rankin '20 paced Hamilton with 11 kills and Courtney Brown '18 and Erin Donahue '18 added nine apiece. Jessica Weston '17 had a team-best four blocks.

Hamilton held four-point advantages in each of the first two sets -- leading 14-10 in the opener and starting the second with a 6-2 burst -- before the Panthers rallied. The hosts scored 10 of the first 15 points in the final set and were never threatened.

Becca Raffel paced Middlebury, finishing with 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Chellsa Ferdinand recorded 32 assists and five service aces. Gigi Alper contributed 20 digs and Melanie English had a hand in seven blocks.

Hamilton plays a second match at Middlebury Saturday, taking on St. Lawrence in non-league play at 2:30 p.m.
