Box Score Five Colby College players scored in double figures and the Mules pulled out a 99-95 NESCAC win in overtime against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Sunday afternoon.
The game was close throughout as there were 15 lead changes and nine ties, and neither team led by more than eight points. The teams combined to commit just 18 turnovers and both shot well from 3-point range as the Continentals ended up at 52.6 percent (10-19) and Colby finished at 47.4 percent (9-19).
The Mules (14-8, 2-6 NESCAC) enjoyed a huge advantage at the free-throw line as they made 36 of 44 attempts (81.8 percent). Hamilton went 19-for-26 at the charity stripe. Colby also held a 46-36 edge on the glass.
The Continentals (11-11, 2-6) held an 80-78 lead in the closing seconds but the Mules' Ryan Jann sent the game to overtime after he was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left. Jann made the first two free throws but his third, which would have won the game in regulation, bounced off the front of the rim and was grabbed by Hamilton's
Andrew Groll '19 as the last two-tenths of a second ran off the clock.
In overtime, Groll gave the Continentals an 82-80 lead with a pair of free throws. Colby responded with 10 straight points and led the rest of overtime. Sam Willson, who scored 18 of his 20 points after halftime, started the spurt with a layup. Jann followed with an old-fashioned 3-point play and Patrick Stewart banked in a 3-pointer from the right wing. Luke Westman made two free throws for a 90-82 advantage with 1:12 remaining.
Hamilton employed some full-court pressure defense and embarked on a 10-3 run over the next 45 seconds that pulled the Continentals back within a point. Groll scored in the paint but John Gallego got those points back for the Mules with two free throws. Hamilton's
Michael Grassey '19 drilled a shot from beyond the arc and, after a free throw by Westman, Grassey was fouled attempting another 3-pointer and made all three free throws.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Colby put the ball in play but one of the Mules found himself trapped in the corner by two Continentals. His attempt to pass out of the double-team was stolen by
Carlos Fineman '17 and he fed Grassey for a layup that made it 93-92 with 27 seconds to go.
Stewart was fouled immediately and restored Colby's three-point lead by making two free throws. After a Hamilton missed shot, Westman was fouled with 16 seconds left and made two more free throws for a 97-92 cushion.
The Continentals'
Peter Hoffmann '19 was fouled on a drive to the basket and made the layup and the free throw, and Hamilton trailed by just two points with eight seconds remaining. Westman, who went 11-for-14 at the line for the game, was fouled again with seven seconds to go and made both free throws for a 99-95 lead. The Continentals, who needed to make a 3-pointer and get fouled, missed a long shot as time ran out.
Grassey paced Hamilton with a season-high 23 points and added seven boards and four assists off the bench. He scored all 23 of his points in the second half and overtime.
Groll posted his fifth double-double against a NESCAC opponent and his seventh overall this season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked three shots.
Jack Dwyer '18 chipped in 16 points and seven assists for the Continentals. Dwyer leads the conference with 5.4 assists per game.
Jack Donnelly '16 drained four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
The Mules were led by Stewart, who made six 3-pointers and didn't miss any. He finished with 22 points. Chris Hudnut dropped in 17 points, Westman had 15 to go along with eight rebounds, and Jann scored 10. Pat Dickert pulled down eight boards off the bench.
In the first half, Colby's largest lead was five points at 21-16 on a pair of free throws by Joseph Connelly with 9:50 left. Hamilton countered with a 14-3 run that led to a 30-24 advantage with 4:52 remaining in the half. Donnelly keyed the spurt with two baskets from beyond the arc. The Continentals eventually built their largest lead of the day of eight points at the break, 38-30.
The Mules pulled within a point at 40-39 early in the second half but Hamilton continued to hold on to its lead until Willson's jumper with 11:39 to go made it 53-52 in favor of Colby. After a Stewart layup gave the Mules a 73-68 lead with 5:06 left, the Continentals scored the next nine points and seemed to be headed for an important home win.
Hoffmann started the run with a free throw and Donnelly added two more. Dwyer drained a 3-pointer and Grassey beat the 30-second shot clock with another from the left corner for a 77-73 edge with 55 seconds remaining. Colby missed five shots and committed two turnovers during its four-plus minute scoring drought.
Willson cut the Mules' deficit in half with a jumper and Dwyer restored the four-point lead on a basket with 15 seconds to go. Hudnut nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner that cut the Hamilton lead to one with eight seconds left and Hoffmann was fouled with six seconds remaining. He made the first free throw but missed the second, and that set up the wild ending to regulation.
The Continentals travel to Trinity College, which leads the conference with a 7-1 record, for a NESCAC game on Friday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
