Six-goal outburst for No. 15 field hockey in regular-season finale

Box Score

The nationally ranked No. 15 Hamilton College field hockey team wrapped up the regular season Tuesday night with a 6-1 win over the visiting Union Dutchwomen at Goodfriend Field. The Continentals start the postseason Saturday, hosting a game in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Championship.

Hamilton finished the regular season 11-4; this year's team has already posted the program's third-highest victory total in a season (the 2009 and 2010 teams won 12 and 13 games, respectively).

The Continentals' six goals marked their second-highest total of the season and raised their total this fall to 49 – six short of the school record set in 2010.

Michaela Giuttari '20 had a hand in Hamilton's first three goals and the Continentals outshot Union (4-12 overall) 35-13 in winning their sixth straight.

Giuttari sparked the hosts to an early 2-0 lead, contributing to a pair of goals in just over a minute and a half. She opened the scoring 4:50 into play by intercepting a clearing pass and driving in alone before putting a shot into the cage. A penalty corner 1:45 later led to goal number two for Hamilton. Giuttari wound up with possession at the near post and sent a pass to the far post that Emma Anderson '17 tipped in.

A Union goal with 6:36 left in the opening period pulled the visitors to within 2-1 but the Continentals scored three times in the first 20 minutes of the second half to blow the game open.

Giuttari scored her second unassisted goal of the evening six minutes in, collecting her 12th goal of the season after being left alone in the circle.

Eva Rosencrans '17, Hamilton's leading scorer, added a goal off a penalty corner about seven minutes later. She received a pass from Anderson – who'd taken the corner to start the play – in front of the net and beat Union goaltender Laura Aptowitz. Aptowitz finished with 14 saves.

Rosencrans has 33 points (14 goals, five assists) so far this season with Giuttari notching 32 (12 goals, eight assists). They're both within three points of matching the program's third-highest single-season total.

With just under 15 minutes left, Rosencrans fed Tatiana Bradley '19 with a well-placed centering pass to the right post. The resulting goal was Bradley's seventh of 2016.

The game's final goal came on a shot from a wide-open Sammy Johnson '20, who collected her first collegiate point after taking a lead pass from Katie Guzzetta '18.

Julia Booth '19 stopped four shots in goal for Hamilton. Liz Wagenbach '18 and Sarah Kane '19 each made a defensive save late in the first half when Union put together its best scoring chances. The visitors capitalized on one with 6:36 left in the half, using a penalty corner to close to within a goal. Alexa Steriti sent the ball into the scoring circle, where Rachel Andreana sent it to Stephanie Resnick. Resnick's shot was initially stopped but trickled into the far corner of the net.

Pairings and game times for Saturday's NESCAC quarterfinals will be announced Wednesday after the conclusion of conference play. The Continentals will be making their fourth appearance in the NESCAC Championship in the six years they've played a conference schedule; this season marks the first time they've hosted a game.
