Ensley '17 stars in football's setback at Colby

Box Score

Colby College led 17-0 late in the second quarter and the Mules went on to a 27-7 NESCAC football win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Colby's Seaverns Field at Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A 44-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Gray '20 to Charles Ensley '17 with 13 seconds left in the second quarter capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive that took just 84 seconds off the clock and pulled Hamilton (1-4 NESCAC) within 17-6. On 4th-and-10 from the Colby 44, Gray rolled to his left and threw a perfect strike to Ensley for the touchdown. The extra point by Robert Morris '17 made it 17-7 at the half.

Ensley finished with six catches for 85 yards and moved into fifth place on the program's all-time list with 1,326 career receiving yards. Ensley's touchdown catch is his second this year and the ninth of his collegiate career.

Gray, who was selected the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week last Sunday, was 17 of 35 passing for 185 yards. Alec Waugh '18 and Joe Schmidt '20 caught three passes apiece. Waugh had three straight catches of 9 yards on the scoring drive.

James Taylor '17 paced the Continentals' defense with 11 tackles, which was one short of his career high. Cole Burchill '19 added eight stops and Will Rothschild '19 recorded six solo tackles, including three for a loss. Matt Glebus '17 picked up his second career sack and Colby Jones '19 returned an interception 32 yards. Jones' pick is his first this year and the fourth of his career.

Jack O'Brien led the Mules' offense on 23 of 32 passing for 297 yards and two touchdowns. O'Brien's 6-yard scoring toss to Ryder Arsenault made it 16-0 with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter. O'Brien added a 19-yard TD pass to Alex Kramer that made it 26-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Don Vivian topped the Colby defense with six tackles and added an interception. Jack Mantu-Caron forced a fumble that Patrick Yale returned 34 yards for the game's first score with 1:37 to go in the first quarter. Yale, who broke up four passes, also returned an interception 40 yards.

John Baron made field goals of 22 and 33 yards and was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra-point tries. Baron's 22-yard field goal gave the Mules (2-3) a 10-0 lead with 9:47 left in the second quarter and his 33-yarder put them up 20-7 with 8:24 remaining in the third.
