Continentals claim nation's longest unbeaten streak with win over Daniel Webster

Box Score

The Hamilton College men's hockey team stretched its unbeaten streak to 11, posting a 6-2 non-league win over visiting Daniel Webster Saturday at Russell Sage Rink.

The Continentals – who took over Division III's longest unbeaten streak thanks to losses by Adrian and Wisconsin-River Falls – are 9-0-2 since Dec. 6, giving them the program's longest stretch without a loss since winning a school-record 14 consecutive games between 1952 and 1954.

Nine players picked up a point and Hamilton (11-3-2 overall) scored three third-period goals after the visiting Eagles had rallied to pull to within a goal.

Jason Brochu '19 led the hosts with a career-best three points. Robbie Murden '17, Neil Conway '18 and Scott Vazquez '17 each collected a goal and an assist.

Brochu scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Continentals up 2-0 midway through the opening period then assisted on a pair of goals, including the game-winner late in the second. Brochu is the NESCAC's second-leading scorer among freshmen.

Richard Court '19 opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal, putting Hamilton ahead less than three minutes into play. Brochu's goal with 7:54 left in the first game the hosts a two-goal lead that they held until Daniel Webster (record) scored twice during a flurry of goals late in the third.

After being held to six shots on goal over the game's first 33 minutes, the Eagles got on the board on a power-play goal by Matt Rasimowicz-Howell with 6:45 to go in the second. The visitors scored again just 2:01 later when David Downie converted a pass from Steven Smoltz, but in between the two Eagle goals Hamilton's Truman Landowski scored the game-winning goal, taking a pass from Brochu and beating Daniel Webster goaltender Anthony D'Urso. Kenny Matheson also assisted on the game winner.

Hamilton sealed the win with three third-period goals. Conway and Murden, the NESCAC's two leading scorers, combined for the Continentals' fourth goal. Murden carried the puck in from center ice, evading a check at the Eagle blue line, then fed Conway for the goal.

Murden added his team and NESCAC-leading 13th goal of the season with 6:06 to go and Vazquez closed the scoring with a booming slap shot on a Continental power play. Brochu and Conor Lamberti assisted on Vazquez' goal, which came with just under four minutes remaining.

Charlie Fennell '17 made his first appearance of the season and stopped 19 shots to earn the win. He made five saves during Daniel Webster power play opportunities as the Hamilton penalty kill unit maintained its second-place national ranking.

D'Urso finished with 35 saves for the Eagles, who fell to 3-13-0.

The Continentals, who finished the first half of the NESCAC schedule 6-2-2, will next be in action Friday in a 7 p.m. showdown at league-leading Trinity. The defending national champion Bantams are ranked fifth by D3hockey.com and eighth in the USCHO.com poll.
