Volleyball defeats Colby in three-set NESCAC match

The Hamilton College volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 defeat over Colby College in a NESCAC match at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Continentals (5-8, 1-6 NESCAC) won by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14.

Giuliana Rankin '20 guided the attack with 13 kills and Jane Fanning '22 smashed nine kills. Emma Parkhurst '21 totaled 15 assists and nine digs, and Meghan Wilkinson '19 chipped in 10 helpers. Nikki Matsuoka '21 and Kayla Self '21 tallied 20 and 17 digs, respectively. Matsuoka guides the conference with an average of 5.41 digs per set and she ranks fifth with 249 total digs.

Paige Hanssen accounted for 14 of Colby's (5-10, 0-6) 29 kills. Molly Manuel tallied 22 assists and Elizabeth Middlebrook had 16 digs.

The Continentals battled back from a 4-1 setback to open the first set. A kill by Rankin got Hamilton within one point at 4-3, but Colby's Hanssen responded with two kills to give the Mules a three-point edge. The cushion did not last long with Hamilton going on a 5-2 run, including back-to-back service aces by Maddy LaPoint '22 to tie the set 8-8. The Continentals tied the set again at 9-9 and 11-11 before taking the lead for good at 12-11 on a Colby attack error. Behind the serving of Kayla Self '21, the Continentals scored five unanswered points for a 17-12 advantage and closed the set on a Colby service error and attack error for the 25-22 win.

Colby held its only lead in the second set at 1-0 before Hamilton took over. Rankin's kill doubled the lead at 14-7 with help from Parkhurst, and Claire Kitz '19 smashed a kill to make the score 22-14. Rankin shut the door on Colby by scoring the final three points for Hamilton.

Rankin continued her tear in the third and final set, helping Hamilton build a 9-2 lead with six kills. The Mules never got closer than seven points and Hamilton posted its first NESCAC victory of the season.

Hamilton faces Amherst College on Friday, Oct. 12 for a conference match at 7 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
