Aulicino '21 advances at women's tennis regional championships

Hamilton College's Sophia Aulicino '21 didn't lose a match in singles or doubles play on the first day of the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Northeast Regional Championship in Geneva, N.Y., on Saturday.

The three-day event is hosted by William Smith College at the Hobart/William Smith Tennis Center and Bristol Field House. Aulicino is seeded eighth in the singles draw and is the fifth seed in the doubles draw with partner Audrey Chor '21.

Aulicino kicked off the event with a victory in the first round against New York University's Kate Shaffer (6-0, 6-2) and breezed to another win in the second round against University of Rochester's Bianca Dyer by the same score. Aulicino faces 10th-seeded Sofia Carlsson of Skidmore College in the third round on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.

Aulicino and Chor cruised to an 8-0 triumph against University of Scranton doubles team Nastashia DeNunzio and Emily Kelly in the first round. The duo went on to an 8-4 victory against St. Lawrence University's Caroline Reilly and Christina Ryan in the second round. Aulicino and Chor take on second-seeded Liya Davidov and Katrine Luddy from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Hamilton's only other winner in either the singles or doubles main draw was the team of Becca Ingber '22 and Ajla Karabegovic '21. The teammates prevailed 8-5 against Scranton's Emilia Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko in the first round of doubles. Ingber and Karabegovic dropped an 8-0 decision against sixth-seeded Andrea Giacobbo and Grace Minassian of TCNJ in the second round.

In other singles first round action, Karabegovic fell to fourth-seeded Frances Cornwall of Vassar College (6-1, 6-0), Ingber was tripped up by TCNJ's Minassian (6-4, 6-1), and Chor was edged by St. Lawrence's Reilly (6-3, 7-5).
