Women's swimming and diving 2017-18 season preview

Team captains Jess Halladay '18 and Olivia Shehan '18 lead the Hamilton College women's swimming and diving team into the 2017-18 season. Halladay and Shehan are part of a seven-person senior class with Lauren Klei '18, Erin Lewis '18, Anya Nugent '18, Missy Paragamian '18 and Emma Raynor '18.

Halladay is one of the top distance freestyle swimmers in program history as she is in second place on the team's top 10 times list in the 1,000-yard free, fourth in the 500 and 1,650 free, and ninth in the 200 free. She finished sixth in the 1,000 free at the 2017 NESCAC championship with a time of 10:28.45, which was less than two seconds off the program record. Halladay was also fourth in the consolation final of the 500 free and 16th in the 1,650 free.

Klei leads the sprint freestyle athletes with a trio of appearances in the top times list. She is sixth in the 200 free and ninth in both the 50 and 100 free. She took first place in the pre-consolation final of the 200 free at last year's NESCAC meet.

Madeleine Lepesant '19 provides depth in distance free events and is the Continentals' top butterfly threat. Lepesant is third on the top times list in the 200 fly and seventh in the 1,000 free. She finished in the top 24 in the 200 fly and the 1,650 free at the 2017 conference championship.

Raynor and Sadie Logan '20 provide a solid 1-2 punch in the backstroke. Raynor is third in the 100 back and fifth in the 200 back on the top times list while Logan is fifth and ninth in the 100 and 200 back, respectively. Raynor landed in the top 24 in those same two events at the 2017 NESCAC meet, and Logan was second in the pre-consolation final of the 50 back and fifth in the pre-consolation final of the 100 back.

Lewis is the team's top breaststroker and is in ninth place on the top times list in the 100 breast. She finished in third place in the pre-consolation final of the 50 breast at last year's conference championship.

Jackie Bussgang '19, Paragamian and Sarah Pickup '19 are the returning divers. This season's roster features nine first-year swimmers and divers. They will be guided by an entirely new staff that includes head coach John Geissinger, assistant coach Mary Buzeta and diving coach Dana Paciello. Geissinger and Buzeta competed for top Division III programs Denison University and Emory University, respectively.

Hamilton captured the team title in their own eight-team invitational in early December of last year as the Continentals' swimmers won seven events. The 2017 Hamilton Invitational will be Dec. 1 and 2 at Bristol Pool.

The Continentals kick off the season with a dual meet at home against Utica College on Friday, Nov. 17. The Pioneers are 4-3 in dual meets already this season, including a victory against Cazenovia College at home on Nov. 10. Hamilton travels to SUNY New Paltz for another dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 18. New Paltz finished third at the SUNY Cortland Relays on Oct. 21, defeated Hartwick College on Oct. 28 and is at Vassar College on Friday.

The Continentals also host Wesleyan (Jan. 6), Rochester Institute of Technology (Jan. 13) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Feb. 3). Another highlight of the regular season is a meet at Williams with Middlebury on Jan. 27.

The NESCAC championship -- one of the top conference meets in Division III -- is Feb. 16 through Feb. 18 at Williams. The 2018 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships are at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis beginning on March 21.
