Hamilton College's Alex Fontana '20 scored in the 29th minute and the Continentals went on to post a 1-0 non-conference win against the Hartwick College Hawks at Hamilton's Love Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Continentals (5-3-3 overall) kept their opponents scoreless for the second straight game and the fourth time this season. Caity Smith '22 made just one save in the first half for the win. Rachel Pike '21 (two saves) took over between the pipes during the final 45 minutes of play.
Cassandra Robataille tallied nine saves for the Hawks (7-5-1).
Jessie Murray '19 set up the game-winner with a lofted ball from midfield to the top of the penalty arc. Sydney Kim '21 one-touched the ball into the air and headed it forward into the box for a charging Fontana. Fontana was one-on-one with the Hawks keeper and she fired the ball into the opposite lower left corner for her third goal of the season.
Fontana could have notched two goals with Hamilton's first scoring opportunity just 2:41 into the contest. Fontana deflected a corner kick towards the net but Hartwick's Kiley Richardson came off the right post for a defensive save.
Kayleigh Harris '20 had an opportunity in the 16th minute when she dribbled out of the left corner, deking around two Hawk defenders for an open shot from 12 yards out, but Robataille managed to deflect the ball off her fingertips and out-of-bounds.
Katie Tenefrancia '19 added a chance in the 55th minute during a corner kick. Kristin Hughes '20 sailed the ball inside the box and Tenefrancia went horizontal for a diving header that popped over the crossbar.
Hamilton returns to NESCAC action this Saturday, Oct. 13 against Bowdoin College for its final home game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. on Love Field.
