The Hamilton College Continentals' varsity 8 finished in seventh place out of 12 boats in the championship eights at the 49th Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton entered three boats in the regatta including the varsity 8 in the championship eights and the second and third varsity 8 in the club championship eights. All races were conducted on a 2.5-mile course.

The Continentals' varsity 8 was one of just two boats from Division III programs in the championship eights as the other 10 were from Division I programs. Hamilton finished the race with a time of 14:10.342. University of Pennsylvania finished first with a time of 13:34.016, Drexel University ended up in second place (13:38.312) and Georgetown University took third place (13:40.428).

"The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is a unique regatta that allows Division III schools to compete against Division I schools," Head Coach Jim Lister said. "We like to put ourselves in an environment where we know we will be challenged against faster programs like University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown."

Hamilton's second varsity 8 placed 16th out of 38 boats in the club championship eights with a time of 15:05.148 as just one boat from a Division III program finished ahead of the Continentals. Hamilton's third varsity 8 finished 35th with a time of 16:53.822. Penn cruised to first place again with a time of 14:00.930. Temple University finished second with a time of 14:17.675 and Georgetown University landed in third place with a time of 14:23.567.

"The Schuylkill results show progress of the teams' hard work," Lister said. "Even though it is our last race on the water until April, the foundation of good work habits continue to be forged. Without knowing the results before coming off the water due to the head race style of racing, all boats indicated good rows. The goal is to row with great intensity and to empty the tank."

The regatta was Hamilton's last for the fall season.
