The Hamilton College Continentals get their 2019-20 rowing season underway this weekend with the Head of the Genesee on the Genesee River in Rochester, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Hamilton made its second appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championships in the spring of 2019 and the Continentals finished in sixth place out of eight teams. Hamilton took fifth place in the second varsity 8 grand final and was sixth in the varsity 8 grand final. The Continentals finished in fourth place in their other trip to the NCAA championships in 2015.

Hamilton received an at-large bid after the Continentals took sixth place in the varsity 8 grand final and ended up fifth in the second varsity 8 petite final at the 2019 National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC). Hamilton was ranked second in the New York Region by the NCAA in I and II eights and the team categories after the NIRC. The Continentals were also ranked sixth in the final Division III Top 15 coaches poll of the regular season.

Head coach Jim Lister is in his first full season with the team after he was hired in January 2019. Lister helped guide Hamilton to bronze medals in the collegiate 8 and collegiate JV 8 at the 2019 New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships. The Continentals also retained the Gilman Plate and Gilman Goblet for defeating Union College in head-to-head matchups, and they kept the Women's V8 Cup for edging St. Lawrence University. The women raced in the Head of the Charles Regatta in October 2018.

Ann-Sophie Koglin '20 and Perrin Salewood '21 lead Hamilton into this season. Koglin is a 2018 all-American who earned her third all-NESCAC team selection in 2019 when she made the first team after getting on the second team in 2017 and 2018. Salewood was on the all-conference second team this past spring.

Nearly everyone from the 2019 NCAA championship lineups is back this season. Koglin and Salewood were joined on the varsity 8 by coxswain Rachel Sutor '20, Emily Norum '22, Pauline Santry '21, Sarah Scheuritzel '22 and Katherine Buckley '21.

Lister will need to find a replacement for Danielle Schuman '19, who was voted to the 2019 Division III All-America Women's Team by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Schuman was placed on the first team and was the Continentals' fifth different all-American and eighth selection overall.

Carson Goos '21 was coxswain for a second varsity 8 that returns everyone. The rowers were Alexia Assimakopoulos '22, Celine Yam '21, Julia Hartnett '20, Alex Stetter '20, Sarine Arzoumanian '21, Adriana Jonas '21, Gretchen Dowdy '21 and Elizabeth Foot '20.

The rest of the fall season is scheduled to include the Head of the Charles (Oct. 20) and the Head of the Schuylkill (Oct. 26). Hamilton has boats entered in the women's collegiate varsity 8 and the women's collegiate second/third varsity 8 races at this Saturday's Head of the Genesee. Those races are scheduled for 12:20 and 12:35 p.m., respectively.
