The Hamilton College Continentals collected gold and silver medals at the Head of the Genesee Regatta in Rochester, N.Y., on Saturday.

Races were delayed for about an hour due to morning rain. The rowers faced increased humidity and a strong tail current once the regatta got underway.

The Continentals performed well in the varsity 8, finishing first out of nine boats, with a race time of 15:51:17. Hamilton finished comfortably ahead of silver medalists Rochester Institute of Technology (16:07.98) and bronze medalists William Smith College (16:24.80).

In the second varsity 8 the Continentals came in second out of six finishers with a time of 16:58.09. RIT's boat captured gold (16:40.83) and St. Lawrence University was third (17:18.05).

Hamilton came in fifth of 13 boats in the novice 8 race with a time of 19:06.89. The University of Rochester took the top spot in 17:12.21.

"I'm very pleased with our results and proud of our kids," head coach Rob Weber said. "The varsity 8 stepped up with a solid performance and seem to have picked up where they left off last year. After losing half of last spring's crew to graduation, we didn't really know what to expect, but they're showing that they intend to be contenders again in the spring. And the second varsity had a promising race as well. It's a relatively inexperienced group, but it'll be exciting to watch them improve.

"Our coxswains did a great job steering the course, which had a number of turns and curves; a good coxswain can save several seconds of time, whereas a mistake or taking a bad line can really cost a crew not only in lost time, but also penalties. Our novices also got their first real taste of racing and performed well."

Hamilton returns to the water Saturday, October 20 at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts.
