Ellen Hull is in her 28th season as the head women's cross country and track & field coach at Hamilton College. In 2018-19 she had three athletes qualify for the NCAA Division III cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field championships. Three runners earned a total of four U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) all-region honors between cross country and indoor track & field. One of Hull's athletes won the 2019 Sebasteanski Award as the most outstanding female performer at the NESCAC track & field championships. Four runners collected all-conference honors as the Continentals won the 200 and 400-meter dash and the 400-meter relay. Team records were set in two relay events, and Hamilton was ranked 27th in the Top 35 cross country coaches poll in mid-September.
Hull coached a pair of athletes who ran in the 2017 NCAA cross country championships and another that competed in the 2018 NCAA outdoor track & field championships. Six runners earned a total of 11 USTFCCCAÂ all-region honors between cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. Two athletes collected all-NESCACÂ accolades based on their performance at the 2018 outdoor conference championships.Â
Hull has coached nine individuals and four team qualifiers at the NCAA cross country championships. Her teams made three straight appearances at the national meet from 1999 to 2001, and she has coached four runners to five all-America awards. Maggie Hanson '02 earned a spot on the all-America team in 1999 and repeated the feat in 2001. Jen Cammarano '03 (2001), Kaitlin Nelson '01 (2000) and Ann Toth '02 (1999) were also all-Americans. The 1999 team finished seventh at NCAAs, which stands as the program's best showing. Hull was selected the 1999 NCAA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after Hamilton took second place at the regional meet. The Continentals own four top-three finishes in the regional race under Hull.
Hull has coached two track & field all-Americans at Hamilton, including Akilah Bond '09 in the triple jump. Bond finished in seventh place at the 2007 and 2009 NCAA indoor championships. Hanson became Hamilton's first female national champion at the 2001 NCAA indoor meet where she finished first in the 5,000-meter run. Hanson was a seven-time indoor and outdoor all-American from 1999 to 2002 in middle-distance and distance events. Twenty of Hull's outdoor athletes have made the NESCAC all-conference team 30 times since 2001.
In 2016-17 one of Hull's athletes competed in the NCAA outdoor championships and earned all-region honors from the USTFCCCA, and two athletes made the all-NESCAC team. In 2015-16 she guided one of her cross country runners to the NCAA championships and two athletes earned all-region honors. The Continentals finished in second place in the 2015 New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Cross Country Championships and Michelle Fish '17 captured the individual title. In 2014-15 one of Hull's cross country runners made the NESCAC all-conference and all-region teams and competed in the NCAA championships.
The Continentals were ranked 32nd in the final 2013 Division III Top 35 women's cross country coaches poll under Hull. Two of her runners finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet and qualified to compete at the NCAA championships. Hull's athletes earned three all-NYSCTC honors and the rookie of the year award, and one made the NESCAC all-conference team. Women's track & field athletes earned a combined total of 10 indoor and outdoor all-conference honors from the NESCAC, ECAC and NYSCTC under Hull in 2014. Hull guided two cross country runners to 2012 USTFCCCA all-region honors based on their performance at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship.
Hull guided the Continentals to the 2006 Liberty League outdoor championship title, and the women won two outdoor league crowns and one indoor league championship under her guidance. Hull and her assistant coaches were selected the league's coaching staff of the year after the 2006 indoor and outdoor seasons. Indoor and outdoor records have been broken in nearly 50 events since Hull's first season in 1994.
Hull's cross country program captured five Liberty League titles, including four straight from 1998 to 2001, and she was named the league's coach of the year in 2000.
Hull's programs also focus on academic success. Twelve track & field athletes made both the 2019 NESCAC winter and spring all-academic teams. In 2018-19 the cross country program qualified for USTFCCCA all-academic team honors for the 11th straight year and the track & field team earned a USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Team award for the eighth year in a row. Three athletes received USTFCCCA all-academic honors after the 2018 cross country and 2019 track & field seasons.
Hull is an accredited Level II USA track and field coach. She earned a bachelor's degree from SUNY Plattsburgh and her master's from Ithaca College. She was an assistant coach at both Plattsburgh and Ithaca, and was head coach of the men's and women's track & field teams at Morrisville State College. Hull resides in New Hartford with her husband Brett, who is Hamilton's head men's cross country and track & field coach. They have two daughters -- Emily '18 and Juliet.
