Roth Wetzel '22 scored 1:10 into the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Hamilton College Continentals to a 1-0 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Love Field on Saturday afternoon.
Wetzel controlled the ball in the middle of Hamilton's offensive zone and dropped a pass back to Hagop Kouchakdjian '21. Kouchakdjian quickly found Aidan Wood '20 at the top of the penalty box and he tapped a leading pass to Wetzel as he charged toward the goalmouth. Wetzel lofted a shot into the opposite upper-right corner, past the outstretched hands of Liam Devanny (6 saves) for his first goal of the season. Wood's assist moved him up to third in the NESCAC with 15 points.
Hamilton (6-5-2, 3-3-2 NESCAC) extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches. Six of those seven contests have been shutouts as the Continentals have outscored their opponents 14-1. Thomas Benson '22 made five saves for the victory.
Wesleyan (5-5-3, 1-4-3) has lost four of its last five.
Wetzel also had the Continentals' best scoring chance during regulation with back-to-back shots in the 20th minute. Wetzel lined up a shot from the right side of the box towards the opposite post but Devanny made a diving save. Wetzel followed his shot and attempted to put away the rebound but Devanny gobbled up the second attempt.
Hamilton travels to Williams College for a midweek NESCAC match on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass.
