Tufts University's Joe Braun scored with 2:22 left in the contest and the nationally ranked No. 3/5 Jumbos posted a 1-0 win over Hamilton College in NESCAC men's soccer action at Tufts' Bello Field on Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Benson '22 made seven spectacular saves in goal for Hamilton (5-4, 3-3 NESCAC). The rookie goalkeeper has totaled a NESCAC-leading 35 saves despite playing in just five games (453+ minutes) this season. The undefeated Jumbos held a 21-9 shot advantage and 9-3 edge in corner kicks as they improved their overall record to 9-0 with five conference wins.
In the 88th minute, Jumbo defender Jackson Najjar dribbled the ball to the midline and passed between the Hamilton defenders for Braun who had a one-on-one with Benson. Benson left the net to challenge the attack and when both players collided, Braun chipped the ball towards the goal and the ball rolled into the far corner before Luke Eckels '20 could clear it away.
Hamilton's two best chances to score came in the first half. Eckels passed the ball up the gut to Aidan Wood '20 for an attempt on Conner Mieth (three saves) but the Tufts goalkeeper made a sliding save in the 11th minute. Eckels had his own chance 20 minutes later when Noah Giovannelli '21 lofted a corner kick into the goal area, but Eckels' header try found the hands of Mieth just below the crossbar.
The Continentals face local rival Utica College on Wednesday, Oct. 3 for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. under the lights of Utica's Charles A. Guetano Stadium.
