The Hamilton College men's soccer team opened its NESCAC schedule with a 1-0 victory over Bates College in Lewiston, Maine on Saturday afternoon.
The Continentals improve to 2-0 overall, and Bates (0-1 NESCAC) evens its record at 1-1.
Aidan Wood '20, last season's NESCAC point leader with 19 through 17 games, notched his first goal of the season 12 and half minutes into the contest. Milo Donovan '21 started the run as he pushed a Bobcat out of the way inside Hamilton's box and passed up to captain, Greg Milnarik '19. Milnarik had the ball poked loose but ran it down to deliver a textbook slide tackle. Jefri Schmidt '20 then gathered the free ball and passed right up the gut to Wood. Wood controlled the ball 30 yards out, and he used his fancy footwork to move around two Bobcat defenders for a clear shot inside the box and ripped the ball into the upper left corner of the net.
The best chance for Bates came just 30 seconds into the second half but Linds Cadwell '20 (1 save) slid for the ball before an open Beaufils Kimpolo-Pene could put a foot on it.
Bobcats' goaltender, Robbie Montanaro kept Hamilton's lead at one when he grabbed a Jeff Plump '20 one timer off a free kick in the 55th minute for his only save of the contest.
Hamilton plays its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. against Ithaca College.
