The Hamilton College Continentals' varsity 8 came in second place out of three boats in Saturday's race on the Erie Canal in Rome, N.Y.
The schedule was reduced to a handful of races due to challenging weather that included 18 to 20 mph tailwinds with gusts up to 35 mph. The races were all 2,000 meters in length.
Hamilton's varsity 8 finished second in their race against Ithaca College and Colgate University. The Continentals finished with a time of 5:59.87, which was about 10 seconds behind Colgate's first place boat (5:49.81). The Ithaca boat came in third with a time of 6:08.99.
The second varsity 8 came in second in a head-to-head race against Ithaca. The Continentals finished with a time of 6:18.86, about three seconds behind Ithaca's winning time of 6:15.25. The third varsity 8 also fell to Ithaca in a head-to-head race, finishing 15 seconds back with a time of 6:42.80. Ithaca's third varsity 8 finished in 6:27.58.
"The varsity men's boat found an aggressive rhythm and were able to carry it through the race," head coach Jim Lister said. "The men's second varsity 8 had a close race with Ithaca, and we expect some good close racing again next week.
"I want to acknowledge the flexibility of all our boats to race on a very difficult day of weather. It's rare this time of year to have winter-like conditions. I also want to thank all the officials and support from the staff to get fair racing for our visiting crews; Ithaca, Colgate, Marist and Syracuse."
The Hamilton men will row again at the 2019 New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships in Saratoga Springs on Saturday, May 4.
