The Hamilton College Continentals rowed to a bronze medal in two races at the 2018 Head of the Genesee Regatta on Saturday.

Races were delayed for about an hour due to morning rain. The rowers faced increased humidity and a strong tail current once the regatta got underway.

The Continentals took bronze in the first varsity 8, finishing third out of eight boats with a time of 14:47.09. Ithaca College won gold (14:36.70) and Rochester Institute of Technology earned the silver medal (14:39.78).

Hamilton also took bronze in the second varsity 8, placing third amongst five boats with a time of 15:36.85. RIT captured gold (15:10.55) and Ithaca collected the silver (15:31.24).

The Continentals entered a novice boat in the collegiate 4+ category and placed 12th out of 16 finishers with a time of 18:35.31. Clarkson University was the event winner in 16:24.76.

"I'm very pleased with our results and proud of our kids," head coach Rob Weber said. "The men gave a great effort and were quite competitive. The varsity 8 has four guys who have moved up from last year's second varsity, and they're still working to find consistency. But as we hone in on the most effective lineup, they will gel more and be able to tap into their power and fitness more. Our second varsity is an inexperienced group, but they will improve and establish more of their own identity and sense of purpose.

"Our coxswains did a great job steering the course, which had a number of turns and curves; a good coxswain can save several seconds of time, whereas a mistake or taking a bad line can really cost a crew not only in lost time, but also penalties. Our novices also got their first real taste of racing and performed well."

Hamilton returns to the water on Oct. 20 and 21 at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts.
