Hamilton College's Joe Tigani '18 fired a 71 on the first day of the 36-hole 2018 NESCAC Men's Golf Championship at Indian Hill Country Club in Newington, Conn., on Saturday.

Tigani is representing the Continentals as one of the three individuals at the championship. His 71 leads the 23-player field after 18 holes and it's his second-best round in the 2017-18 season. He entered the weekend with a 75.07 stroke average and hasn't shot worse than a 78 all season long. Sunday's first group is scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m.

The top four teams and top four individual finishers not from those teams from the fall's NESCAC Championship Qualifier advanced to this weekend's event. This is the first year individuals are eligible for the championship.

Tigani qualified as an individual after he carded rounds of 75 and 72 and tied for third place with a 147 at Indian Hill CC last fall. Tigani is playing in the NESCAC championship for the third time. He and the Continentals qualified as a team in 2015 and 2016.
