Baseball falls to nationally ranked Rowan Saturday in Florida

The Rowan University Profs scored nine runs in the top of the third inning and went on to post a 12-1 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale, Fla., on Saturday afternoon.

The game was stopped after seven innings due to the tournament's 10-run rule. Five Hamilton errors led to 10 unearned runs. Rowan is ranked third in the Top 30 coaches poll and 11th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll.

The Continentals (0-6 overall) scored in the sixth inning when Matt Zaffino '21 led off with a walk and came around to score on a one-out double to left center by Jarrett Lee '21. Tom Riley '20 started on the mound and took the loss. Riley allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk and struck out three in two innings.

Anthony Harrold and Dillon Mendel led the Profs' offense with three hits apiece. Mendel drove in three runs and Harrold scored three times. Five of Rowan's 15 hits went for extra bases. Danny Serreino improved his record to 2-0 as he fanned 10 and walked five in five hitless innings.

The Profs (11-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first after Dan Shane led off with a ground-rule double to left center and scored on an infield error. Rowan scored nine runs with two outs in the third inning on seven hits, a walk, a hit batter and two errors. Shawn Leydon, Alex Kokos and Mendel all had two-run singles in the big inning. Justin Provost hit a solo home run to left field with two outs in the fourth inning and Mendel and Harrold generated another two-out run in the seventh inning. Harrold reached base on an infield single and came around on Mendel's triple to center field.

Hamilton is back in action on Monday, March 19 with a doubleheader against Farmingdale State College at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
