Utica College scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning and the Pioneers went on to post an 8-2 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals in the first-ever game at Hamilton's Loop Road Baseball/Softball Complex on Thursday.

The Continentals (6-6 overall) finished with nine hits but only had one in the last three innings. Seven of the nine batters in Hamilton's starting lineup collected at least one hit.

Utica (5-8) ended its losing skid at seven games. The Pioneers managed just one single through the first four innings but exploded for five hits in the fifth and took advantage of two errors by the Continentals in their big five-run inning.

Hamilton's Ryan Wolfsberg '17 led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field that bounced off the top of the fence and over. Wolfsberg ended up with two hits and is second on the team with a .343 batting average (12-for-35). His 11 career home runs ties him for fifth place on the team's all-time list with teammate Andrew Haser '17. Wolfsberg also made a nice running catch before he crashed into the fence in foul territory in right field in the third inning.

Jordan Northrup '19 added two doubles for the Continentals. Northrup leads the team with three doubles. Callum Slater '20 (1-2) started on the mound and allowed three earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Slater fanned six and walked three. Kenny Gray '20 pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Utica's offense was led by Jacob Gaboriault and his three hits, including a double. JT Ross singled, doubled and drove in two runs. Haydn Demers-St. Hilaire (1-0) picked up the win as he pitched the first six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Demers-St. Hilaire struck out six and walked none. Brett Sarnowski earned his first save this year with three shutout innings.

In the top of the fifth Adam Nell, who led off with a double, drew the Pioneers even when he scored on a passed ball. Christian Tiffin scored the go-ahead run on an outfield error after he advanced to third base on a single by Brian McGuire. McGuire later made it 3-1 when he scored on an infield error, and Tim Quinlan plated the fourth run on a ground out to the shortstop. Gaboriault capped the rally with a two-out RBI single to right center.

Hamilton cut its deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Haser led off with a single to center and scored on a double to right center by Northrup. Utica got the run right back the next half-inning as Quinlan scored on a two-out single through the left side by Zachary Schellenger. The Pioneers clinched the win with two runs in the eighth. Ross plated Jake Ryan and Ryan Palmer with a double down the left field line.

The Continentals play their 2017 NESCAC West Division opener at Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
