Sports Performance Philosophy
Our sports performance philosophy is based on the conjugate and concurrent methods of weight lifting. Our programs are based on Soviet and Eastern European bloc theories. These theories promote the idea of training various motor qualities simultaneously to maximize sport performance.
The Hamilton College strength and conditioning program focuses on enhancing performance and injury prevention. The Power Weight Room allows the sports performance staff to prescribe year-round sport specific programs.
Before training programs are designed, the muscular and metabolic needs for each sport are analyzed. Student-athletes each receive an individualized program based on their sport, training ability and general fitness level with attention to relative and absolute strength. These detailed workouts are prescribed to address any deficiencies while promoting the development of skills used during competition.
Injury prevention is emphasized throughout the sports performance staff. Through resistance training, the number and severity of injuries are reduced. If an injury does occur, the sports performance staff works to ensure a safe and complete rehabilitation. The objective is to rehabilitate sport injuries in order to return players to full participation as quickly as possible.
Performance Goals:
1. Sport Specificity
-Develop training programs that are specific to the metabolic demands and movements of each student-athlete's sport.
2. Periodization
- Programs are divided into phases with specific goals to maximize strength and power. Our main focus is to “peak” the student-athlete for competition.
3. Recovery
- A healthy diet, adequate rest and sufficient hydration are critical for a program to be successful. Student-athletes must be committed to doing the right things before and after each workout.
4. Pride!
- There are many factors that influence athletic success, including mental toughness, desire, attitude, teamwork and focus. It's important to have a positive attitude, to be mentally tough and to take pride in what you do.
