Wanikpun '20 medalist as women's golf wins own invitational

Hamilton College cruised to the team title of its own 2017 Hamilton Women's Golf Invitational at rain-soaked Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford on Sunday.

The Continentals jumped out to a 45-stroke lead with a four-person team total of 332 in perfect playing conditions on Saturday afternoon. The Hamilton women slipped to a team score of 362 in the final round but still captured the team trophy with a tournament total of 694. William Smith College was runner-up in the five-team field at 750 and St. John Fisher College ended up third with an even total of 800.

Winda Wanikpun '20 earned her first career medalist honors for the Continentals with a 36-hole total of 162. Wanikpun fired a 2-over 75 -- the best round of her Hamilton career -- in Saturday's first round.

Libbie Warner '19, who led the Continentals in stroke average last season at 80.33, was second to Wanikpun with a two-day total of 167 after rounds of 83 and 84. Celia Lau '21 and Sophia Archos '21 carded 87s in their first round as collegiate golfers on Saturday. Lau (179) and Archos (186) finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

Hamilton competes in the St. Lawrence University Invitational at Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10.
