The Hamilton College men's soccer team came up short in their NESCAC opening game with a 2-1 loss to Bates College at Hamilton's Withiam Field on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams wore gold laces in their cleats in conjunction with the Go4theGoal Foundation. As of Saturday morning, the Hamilton College men's soccer team leads the nationwide competition by raising $12,863. All donations will benefit children battling cancer and their families in the local community.

Jefri Schmidt '20 scored his sixth career goal in the 20th minute with help from Eli Lichtman '18. Nate Merchant scored the game winner for Bates with just three minutes remaining in the first half.

The Continentals turned up the pressure in the second half, delivering 16 of their 23 shots. Hamilton completed the game with 14 corner kicks with five of those attempts in the final three minutes.

Robbie Montanaro came up big for Bates in the 88th minute. The goalkeeper denied Aidan Wood '20 on a shot from the top of the penalty area and stopped the rebound attempt by Lichtman. Montanaro finished with nine saves. Linds Cadwell '20 collected four saves for Hamilton.

Hamilton visits SUNY Polytechnic for a non-conference match on Sunday, Sept. 10. The start time is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
