The Hamilton College men's rowing team competed in the 2017 New York State Collegiate Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday.

Weather conditions were nearly perfect for the Saturday morning heats but quickly deteriorated in the afternoon due to high winds. The men's eight final was the last race run in reasonable conditions.

Hamilton qualified for the varsity eight final by finishing second in its four-crew heat with a time of 6:09.068. The Continentals ended up in third place in the final with a time of 6:47.586 and collected what is believed to be the first medal for a Hamilton men's varsity eight at this event. The U.S. Military Academy captured first place in 6:40.6 and Rochester Institute of Technology was the runner-up with a time of 6:45.019.

"The men's varsity eight had the breakthrough race we've been hoping for and working toward for three years," head coach Rob Weber said. "We talked before their heat about how our men's eights have come up just short of a signature result at championship regattas the past two years and that this was their opportunity to make program history and establish their legacy. They responded with a huge race and we're excited for next weekend."

Hamilton had one of 15 entries in the collegiate varsity four. The Continentals finished fourth in their heat with a time of 7:14.823 and moved on to the petit final where Hamilton landed in sixth place in 9:22.102. Canisius College was the petit final winner with a time of 8:40.2.

Hamilton participates in the 2017 National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on Friday, May 12.
