Morse '19 posts two goals, assist in men's lacrosse loss

The Colby College Mules scored six goals in the first quarter and never trailed in their 10-8 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Colby's Harold Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (1-2, 0-2 NESCAC) rallied to tie the score at 6-6 and again at 8-8, but Mason Brady put the Mules ahead with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter and added an insurance goal on a feed from Riley Bergstrom 16 seconds later. Colby evened its record at 1-1 overall and in the conference.

Chad Morse '19 boasted three points on two goals and an assist, and Zach Larsen '19 was credited with three helpers for the Continentals. Jack Gaul '18 scored twice and Henry Hill '19 chipped in a goal and an assist. Eric Zurmuehle '18 won 13 of 22 faceoffs and scooped up seven ground balls. James Sanderson '21 picked up five ground balls and Matt Greene '18 collected four. Larsen and Rob Arrix '19 caused two turnovers apiece, and Kyle Gately '20 made 11 saves in his second career start at Hamilton.

Brady and C.J. Hassan ended up with two goals and one assist apiece for the Mules. Tucker Dietrick found the back of the net twice and Don Vivian recorded a goal and two helpers. Joe Paolatto won nine faceoffs and collected seven ground balls. Brad McCarthy finished with three caused turnovers and C.J. Layton posted nine of his 16 saves in the fourth quarter when he held the Continentals scoreless for the final 11 minutes.

Colby jumped out to a 4-0 lead 8:06 into the first quarter thanks in part to a pair of man-up goals. Hill put Hamilton on the scoreboard with 5:55 remaining but the Mules scored twice in the last four minutes of the quarter and owned a 6-1 advantage after one.

The second quarter was all Continentals. Larsen passed to Clay McCollum '19 for his 56th career goal during a man-up situation just 30 seconds into the quarter, and Hill found Morse for another goal just under two minutes later. Morse passed to Chris Conley '20 for a goal that pulled Hamilton within two with 3:30 to go. Colby took a 6-4 lead into the break.

Larsen was credited with assists on a pair of man-up goals by Gaul in the opening 4:50 of the third quarter and the Continentals moved into a 6-6 tie. Vivian had assists on goals by Dietrick and Hassan as the Mules held an 8-6 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Hamilton clawed back to tie the score again early in the fourth quarter. Henry Hunt '20 scored his fourth career goal five seconds before an extra-man opportunity expired with 12:38 left, and Morse drew the Continentals even with his eighth goal this season 68 seconds later.

Hamilton takes on Keene State College on Wednesday, March 14 down in Davenport, Fla., under the lights at 7 p.m.
